Spirent and Oasis partner to help OEMs embed IoT connectivity
February 11, 2016
Singapore company Oasis Smart SIM has teamed up with UK firm Spirent Communications to remove connectivity and network provisioning barriers for the rapid development of connected products and devices, such as cameras, smart vehicles, logistics and production goods.
The partnership marks both firms' entry into the connected IoT business. Before joining forces, both researched the hurdles that OEMs face in making diverse connected products, ranging from white goods in the kitchen to those used in animal management, suitable for sale in world markets. It became clear that old technologies and business models based on use of the traditional SIM were not suitable for IoT device activation and subscription provisioning on a global scale.
The partnership will thus introduce two-click software, including USIM functionality, which OEMs can embed into products for seamless cellular service activation in any of the world's markets, as well as life-cycle management. The product will be showcased on the stands of Spirent and Oasis at this month’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
"Spirent and Oasis have teamed up to help manufacturers build better and smarter products for the connected world," says Dennis Juul Poulsen, general manager of Spirent. "Be it a connected truck or a pair of smart running shoes, OEMs in whatever vertical market now have a solution that provides customers with seamless instant connectivity and the freedom to choose whatever cellular service provider they wish."
Oasis Smart SIM provides both end-to-end and customised services to enable the deployment of global USIM technology connectivity and management.
"Spirent's unique automatic access point name (APN) setup and remote subscription management with Oasis' embedded smart USIM functionality is a game changer in connected products and devices,” said Olivier Leroux, CEO of Oasis Smart SIM. “OEM vendors now have a leaner way to manufacture, distribute and maintain connected products compared to solutions centred on the traditional SIM."
Oasis says its mission is to embed USIM technology in all connected devices and provide secure services to manage their activation and connectivity. This value proposition comes from Oasis offering a full set of services for embedded and reprogrammable SIM, along with products for activation, connectivity and subscription management.
Spirent Communications provides a portfolio of products to test data centres, cloud computing and virtualised environments, high speed Ethernet networks and services, 3G and 4G wireless networks and devices, network and application security, and positioning technologies.
