Renesas and Link Labs demo radio module at IoT World in San Francisco

Japanese company Renesas Electronics and Maryland-based Link Labs, a provider of wide-area, low-power IoT networks for business and government, have jointly developed the LL-RLP-20 radio module for integration in products such as security monitoring devices, agricultural monitors, parking sensors, home automation and smart meters.
 
The device is making its debut this week at Internet of Things World in San Francisco where it is being demonstrated as part of an IoT enabler.
 
The module uses the Renesas RX111 microcontroller (MCU) and the Semtech SX1276 LoRa long distance radio transceiver technology.
 
“Collaboration is key to developing a strong IoT ecosystem, and we are pleased to team up with Link Labs, an emerging star in the IoT and M2M market,” said Vin D’Agostino, vice president for Renesas Electronics in America. “Link Labs’ Symphony Link system and the LL-RLP-20 module take full advantage of the flexibility of our RX111 MCU and offer a balance of range, interference immunity and energy consumption that make it ideal for low-power connected sensors and edge nodes in an IoT infrastructure.”
 
The Link Labs LL-RLP-20 radio module is an FCC/IC and Etsi/CE certified, compact, low-power, bidirectional radio module for the 915MHz ISM and the 868MHz Etsi frequency bands. The module achieves a maximum sensitivity of -141dBm with a maximum output power of +19dBm resulting in a link budget of 160dB and achieves ranges of more than 15km in rural environments and 2 to 5km in a dense urban environment. It features the Symphony Link protocol, which allows very large point-to-multipoint networks to be deployed at less cost than using cellular M2M or a mesh network alternative.
 
“Symphony Link is a powerful alternative to Zigbee or other mesh networks that consume a lot of power, require large batteries or a constant power source, and deliver poor range,” said Link Labs CEO Brian Ray. “Combined with the superior performance and ultra-low power consumption of Renesas’ RX111 MCU and the ease of use of e2studio IDE, we’ve developed a powerful radio module that enables the cost-effective deployment of large point-to-multipoint networks for use with M2M and other IoT systems.”
 
The MCU provides low sleep current, a small physical footprint and multiple peripherals. The RX family's complex instruction set allows for DSP-like flexibility to perform encryption and decryption algorithms to secure the wireless protocol. It can also read and write to the data flash without stopping the main processor execution.
 
Link Labs offers several gateway and base station systems that work with the module, giving OEMs a choice of ways to shorten time to market for IoT and M2M products.
