Plat.One brings internet of coffee to Italy

Once, making a cup of coffee was the simplest thing to do. Boil some water, spoon some instant powder into a cup and merge. It might not be the best coffee in the world, but it worked. Some though prefer the all-singing-and-dancing coffee machines using only the best blends and each cup brewed to perfection.
 
Now, a manufacturer of coffee machines is going a step further by using M2M technology to link its machines at various retailers together, keeping track of the performance of its machines, and driving advanced capabilities such as auto-replenishment of supplies, predictive maintenance and innovative pay-as-you-brew business models.
 
This is Italian company Gruppo Cimbali, which is using an IoT application from Plat.One to power the next generation of La Cimbali professional coffee machines for its retail customers.

Our Edgeware technology was uniquely suited to meet their high-reliability requirements, allowing us to run directly on each coffee machine, which coordinating with a central back-end server.”
 
The Connected Coffee programme is a multi-phase initiative to deliver higher quality service and consumer satisfaction for Cimbali customers. The programme creates a Connected Coffee community, integrating the entire coffee ecosystem to increase the value of each machine while reducing the overall environmental footprint. Each machine becomes a key actor coordinating the surrounding coffee ecosystem to drive just-in-time delivery of all coffee essentials, issuing early warning of maintenance needs, and creating better consumer understanding and thus higher satisfaction.

Cimbali designs, manufactures and distributes professional coffee machines and equipment dedicated to cafeteria brands La Cimbali, Faema, Casadio and Hemerson. The Milan-based group exports about 80 per cent of the production to more than 100 countries.
