Upland Global Wireless Technology is deploying Ingenu’s RPMA network in Nigeria.

Upland Global Wireless Technology will deploy the IoT network, powered by California-based Ingenu’s RPMA (random phase multiple access) technology, to serve Nigeria’s population of approximately 184 million, providing connectivity for IoT and M2M applications including oil and gas, smart city, smart grid, agriculture, and asset tracking.

The Nigerian Machine Network rollout has begun in Lagos, and will continue through the Niger Delta, initially monitoring key oil and gas assets in the petroleum-rich region of the country. The remainder of the network rollout is due for completion by late 2017, which will enable IoT connectivity across Nigeria’s more than 920,000 square kilometres of area.

In the challenging environment and rugged terrain of Nigeria, reliable network operation is paramount. Consequently, Upland Global Wireless Technology evaluated an array of low-power, wide-area (LPWA) and cellular technologies, determining that Ingenu’s RPMA network surpassed others in terms of range coverage, secure two-way transmission, network capacity and cost savings.

“We are extremely pleased to partner with Ingenu to deploy RPMA technology across the whole country of Nigeria,” said Bola Awobamise, president and CEO of Upland Global Wireless Technology. “We have a successful history of collaboration in bringing innovative solutions to market, and we believe the IoT network will provide the country with distinct advantages in delivering useful applications to its citizens.”

The RPMA network has since been deployed in real-world environments, most recently as part of the Shell Nigeria digital oilfield, which saved the petroleum services company over $1m in infrastructure investment, and took just weeks to implement.

“Upland Global has vast experience implementing private networks with Ingenu’s RPMA technology, and has deployed a host of IoT devices within the RPMA ecosystem,” said John Horn, chief executive officer of Ingenu. “Working with this innovative company, we look forward to expanding the global network to west Africa and bringing the benefits of IoT connectivity to Nigeria’s ever-expanding economy.”

Using globally available spectrum, RPMA technology is purpose-built for M2M and IoT connectivity, offering range, coverage and capacity with low power requirements and longer-lasting battery life.

Upland Global Wireless Technology is headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria, and is focused on delivering a comprehensive end-to-end service on every layer of the IoT stack.
