€10 for ten years – Deutsche Telekom flat-rate IoT offer
March 8, 2018
At last week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Deutsche Telekom and the Cologne-based mobile communications provider 1NCE presented Europe's first data flat rate for smart devices on the IoT.
Customers will pay a lifetime fee of €10 in the prepaid tariff and receive a data flat rate of up to 500Mbyte for the service life of each smart device of ten years. In this way, costs can be better calculated because users will no longer have to pay monthly, changing amounts depending on the volume of data consumed. The offer is initially valid within the European Union as well as in Switzerland and Norway.
1NCE, in which Deutsche Telekom is also financially involved, networks machines and devices on the IoT that transmit only small amounts of data at irregular intervals – such as smart water meters or smoke detectors. Deutsche Telekom provides 1NCE capacities from its machine network as part of 5G.
“With this tariff, we will make it as easy as possible for our customers to quickly implement new IoT solutions," said Alexander Sator, founder and CEO of 1NCE. “That means no monthly bills, no additional fees, no tariff jungle. Deutsche Telekom, as a pioneer in NB-IoT, is effectively pushing ahead with the expansion of the network. We hope that this close cooperation will accelerate growth in the European IoT market.”
Both companies want to make the use of IoT as cost-effective as possible and use Deutsche Telekom's NB-IoT technology for this purpose. NB-IoT achieves long ranges, consumes hardly any energy, costs little and is aimed in particular at customers from the energy, transport, logistics and public services sectors for smart city deployments.
“Deutsche Telekom's own service-based NB-IoT offering is optimally complemented by 1NCE's simple, disruptive business model," said Hagen Rickmann, managing director for business customers at Deutsche Telekom. “Together, we are addressing a larger market and creating the best customer experience.”
